WEST SENECA — It was a milestone night for Jamestown’s girls basketball program at West Seneca West on Tuesday.
Senior Marley Drake became the seventh Red Raiders girl to surpass 1,000 career points and head coach Ken Ricker tied Seth Beauseigneur for the all-time record in coaching victories with 160 as Jamestown beat West Seneca West 74-49 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 action.
“I was lucky enough to teach with him at Washington (Middle School) at the end of his career. He would go on the bus with us for big games. We was a mentor to me, somebody who I looked up to. He is still a great friend to the program,” Ricker said. “He’ll remind me tonight that he’s the only coach at Jamestown to take a team to the state Final Four (1984). He’s just a great guy.
“I’ve scored zero of the baskets and grabbed zero of the rebounds,” Ricker added. “I’ve had a ton of great players, including the group that we have right now. … Being able to tie him is really cool for me.”
Drake made a 3-pointer late in the first quarter to give her 7 points in the period and exactly 1,000 for her career, but the Red Raiders (6-4, 2-2) trailed 16-12.
Jamestown turned it around from there, outscoring the Indians 62-33 over the final 24 minutes.
Senior Kylie O’Brien finished with 23 points and 19 rebounds while junior Alyson Canfield had 21 points for the Red Raiders.
“Kylie played great,” Ricker said. “That’s what we need to have.”
Senior Mickia Freeney had just 4 points, but 10 assists, seven steals and six rebounds.
“When we shook hands, their coach (Joe Dougherty) wanted to seek Mickia out and let her know how great she played,” Ricker said of Freeney. “She really turned things around for us in the second and third quarters.”
Drake finished with 15 points, five assists and four steals. She became the first Red Raider to reach 1,000 career points since Chrisanna Green in 2016.
“She’s been through a lot in this program. She’s worked really hard,” Ricker said of Drake. “I was really, really happy for her, especially that she got it out of the way early.”
Kathryn Quinn led West Seneca West (3-6, 0-4) with 12 points.
Jamestown will travel to Orchard Park for another ECIC Division 1 contest Friday.
“We need to go,” Ricker said, “and get another league win.”
NOTES: Anna Engquist had 11 points and nine rebounds for Jamestown. … In the jayvee game, the Red Raiders won their second game of the season 48-46 as Jazmyn Tonkin scored the winning basket with 5 seconds remaining.
