Westfield, Jamestown Dominate Girls Games At FSU’s Dods Hall

FREDONIA — An assertive Tanleigh Bestine got to the basket repeatedly and scored 19 of her game-high 22 points during the second half as Westfield beat Maple Grove 46-22 in the second game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day High School Showcase on Monday afternoon at Fredonia State University’s Dods Hall.
The Wolverines, who improved to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West play with the victory, led 18-17 at halftime before outscoring the Red Dragons 28-5 in the second half.
Bestine, a junior, finished with 22 points and six rebounds, while senior Haleigh Dellow had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals for Westfield.
Senior Erin Mansfield had 11 points, seven steals and four rebounds, while senior Courtney Martin added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals for Maple Grove, which fell to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The Red Dragons led 5-4 early before Wolverines freshman Mackenzie Schumaker and Bestine scored on back-to-back trips midway through the first quarter to give Westfield an 8-5 lead.

The Wolverines’ lead grew to as many as eight midway through the second quarter before Maple Grove rallied with a 10-3 rally that included a 3-pointer from Mansfield and another trifecta from Martin to beat the halftime buzzer.
After the break, it was all Westfield.
Bestine opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, a pair of free throws and another bucket in the lane to put the Wolverines up eight and the Red Dragons never got closer than six the rest of the way.
In the final eight minutes, Maple Grove went 0 for 10 from the field and turned the ball over seven times.
For the game, Westfield shot 16 of 53 (30.2%) from the field, including 3 of 16 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 18 times. The Red Dragons were 9 of 44 (20.5%) from the field, including 2 of 19 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 32 times.

RED RAIDERS ROLL
Senior Kylie O’Brien had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to lead Jamestown to a 64-28 nonleague win over Fredonia in the first game of the day.
Senior Marley Drake added 20 points, five steals and three assists for the Red Raiders (8-3, 3-2 ECIC D1), who led 17-4 after the first quarter and 36-8 at halftime.
Junior Keiliany Diaz led the Hillbillies (3-8, 0-3 CCAA D1West) with 12 points.
Jamestown led 12-0 midway through the first quarter with 9 of the points coming off Fredonia turnovers before Diaz made the Hillbillies’ first field goal with 1:29 remaining in the period.

Another 13-0 run by the Red Raiders early in the second quarter made it 30-6 and Drake’s 3-pointer before the halftime buzzer gave Jamestown a 28-point lead.
Fredonia’s best shooting quarter was the third when the Hillbillies went 6 for 10 from the field, but turnovers were still a problem.
For the game, Jamestown was 23 of 80 (28.8%) from the field, including 8 of 28 (28.8%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over nine times. Fredonia was 12 of 45 (26.7%) from the field, including 0 of 4 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 41 times.
Mickia Freeney chipped in 12 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists for Jamestown.
