RANDOLPH — It’s been nearly 13 years since Frewsburg beat Randolph in boys basketball.

The Bears will have to wait a couple of weeks for another chance.

And with the Cardinals playing the kind of basketball they are right now, it will still be a tall task.

Jaiden Huntington had 27 points and seven rebounds while Drew Hind added 20 points and 10 assists as Randolph, the third-ranked team in the state according to the New York State Sportswriters Association, beat Frewsburg 82-57 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East action Friday night.

“Our offense is better this year than last year. We aren’t clogging up any space. We are very cognizant to inside-out. Once Jaiden gets a touch on the perimeter, he has to go get a touch inside. … We want him in both places,” Randolph head coach Kevin Hind said. “Today, he missed a couple early, but it’s hard for their big guy to come out and guard him on the perimeter.”

The Cardinals (9-1, 5-0) took over the game with a 28-16 second quarter during which they shot 9 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over just three times.

“Offensively, we were a little stagnant,” Frewsburg head coach Rob Collver said. “We had a lot of minutes where we didn’t score and turned the ball over too much.”

The Bears (6-3, 3-2) cut their deficit to three on a Garrett Brink 3-pointer late in the first quarter, but Griffin Nelson answered with a 3-pointer at the other end of the floor as Randolph took a 17-11 lead after eight minutes.

On the Cardinals’ first possession of the second quarter, Frewsburg big man Andrew LeBaron picked up his third foul. That opened the door for Huntington to begin controlling the paint as he scored 16 points in the middle two quarters.

“Jaiden had a really nice game. For the first time Andrew had to play him, it’s tough,” Collver said. “Now that Andrew has a taste of it … he got better in the second half.”

Connor Murray converted a three-point play late in the second quarter that pulled the Bears to within seven, but Randolph finished the first half on a 12-1 run that included a three-point play from Huntington and a trifecta of 3-pointers from Hind to make it 45-27 at the break.

“That’s what you sign up for when you play them. You have these opportunities where the minute you give them space or lag off a little bit, he’ll hit two or three in a row,” Collver said. “We tried helping on Jaiden and closing out. … We have to do a better job defensively.”

A 10-2 run early in the third quarter pulled Frewsburg to within 12 at 49-37, but that would be as close as the Bears got in the second half.

“I watched a lot of film on them this week. … This will be our fourth time playing back-to-back games. This was one of our first games that we’ve been able to prepare for,” Coach Hind said. “They threw some presses and zones at us, and we were ready. I know what they like to do. This week, we worked really hard, watched a lot of film and had a good week of practice.”

Murray finished with 21 points, three steals and three assists in defeat.

“If you’re in a zone, you have to rotate quickly and then they beat you on your rotations. If you play man, Jaiden takes you out and beats your big guy unless your big guy is athletic,” Collver said of the challenges Randolph presents. “With our ability to shoot the ball, 15 points is not impossible.”

Randolph will continue its daunting nonleague schedule this evening when it hosts Class C honorable-mention York of Section V. The Golden Knights lost to Avon in last year’s Class C crossover game.

“(Frewsburg), Silver Creek and Falconer played us well. We have to go to Silver Creek and to Frewsburg. I’ve been coaching a long time. When you go on the road, it can be a 15-point swing any night,” Coach Hind said. ” … I have some games coming up with four really good teams. … I want to make certain I have eight of the best (nonleague) games around.”

NOTES: Randolph shot 29 of 54 (53.7%) from the field, including 11 of 25 (44%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 11 times. Tristan Farnham grabbed six rebounds, Conley had five rebounds and Griffin Nelson had four assists for the Cardinals. … Frewsburg shot 20 of 51 (39.2%) from the field, including 11 of 25 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 16 times. Gavin Smith had six rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and two steals while Carr had five rebounds and two steals for the Bears. … Randolph won the jayvee game 79-45. Cooper Freeman led the Cardinals with 32 points and Broden Brooks had 17. Blake Weaver led the Bears with 16 points and Kael Collver had 13.
