Amy (King) Swanson

Someone should probably alert the postman that mail destined for Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Swanson, East Main Street in Westfield, may also be addressed as Mr. and Mrs. Hall of Famers. That’s because Amy (King) Swanson is joining her husband, Nolan (2003), as an inductee of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame.

Amy (King) Swanson was born in 1976 and graduated from Clymer Central School in 1995. She earned multiple letters and team Most Valuable Players Awards while competing for the Lady Pirates in volleyball, basketball and track and field.

She set all-time girls’ basketball records at Clymer with 1,856 points, steals with 690 and assists with 582. She was a 4-time Post-Journal First Team All-Star. As a senior, Amy was named to the First Team All-Western New York Girls’ Basketball Team as well as earning the Post-Journal’s Player of the Year award for 1995.

Amy was equally proficient in track and field. She was a 4-time Post-Journal Track and Field First Team All-Star and was the Post-Journal’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1994. She was the first athlete in Clymer Central history to qualify for the New York State championships, first as a triple jumper in 1994 and then in both the triple and long jumps in 1995. At the time of her high school graduation, she held school records in the 100, 400, 4×100 relay, long jump and triple jump.

She also competed for the Chautauqua Striders where she was a National Qualifier for the Junior Olympics in the triple jump for three consecutive years, 1992, 1993 and 1994. Her personal best was 37’5″ in the triple jump.

In volleyball she was a 2-time Post-Journal First Team All-Star and set Clymer records for blocks, points and spikes.

Following her graduation from Clymer Central, Amy King was a four-year starter in women’s basketball at Daemen College. She was the Wildcat’s Most Valuable Player all four years and was team captain for two years.

She was a four-time conference all-star and was the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year for the 1998-1999 season.

She set 15 women’s basketball records at Daemen including games played (129), points (1,912), assists (638), steals (647), field goals made (611), 3-pointers made (173) and free throws made (517).

Amy set National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II records for career steals and single season steals (179). She was an Honorable Mention All-American in her junior year and concluded her brilliant basketball career by being selected as a Third Team All-American in her senior year.

She graduated from Daemen with a degree in special education in 1999. King is an inductee of the Daemen College Athletics Hall of Fame.

Amy Swanson is co-owner of the Pinehurst Golf Club in Westfield and is a special education teacher in the Sherman Central School system.
