Playing just six girls — five starters for most of the game — can be tiring for any high school basketball team.
When that team is the Jamestown Red Raiders and they press the entire length of the court for the entire game, legs are undoubtedly the first thing to go.
And when the legs go, free-throw shooting suffers.
That seemed to be the case Friday night.
Jamestown led with just over a minute remaining, but Sacred Heart scored on its final two trips down the floor and beat the Red Raiders 61-58 in the second game of the Southwestern Tournament.

The Sharks will take on host Southwestern in today’s championship game at 7:30 p.m. Jamestown and Warren will play in the 6 p.m. consolation game.
“It’s an amazing tournament. There’s nobody you want to play first. You don’t want to play Warren because they are so well coached and disciplined. You don’t want to play Southwestern because of all that they have,” Jamestown head coach Ken Ricker said. “I came and watched (Thursday) night. It was basically almost this game. They fought each other all game and one team made a couple of plays down the stretch.”
Jamestown’s press forced the Sharks into 26 turnovers and held them to 23-of-63 (36.5%) shooting from the field, but the Red Raiders’ inefficiency at the free-throw line — they were just 10 of 24 — cost them in the end.
Senior Meghan Trapper, a returning New York State Sportswriters Association Class B all-state selection, poured in 35 points to lead Sacred Heart.
“She’s All-Western New York last year. She’s going to (score),” Ricker said of Trapper. ” … We do what we do. It’s a mind set. It’s a belief that we can do it. We’re trying to wear you down with four girls with experience. It’s something that we believe in and a fun way to play. … We’d probably be better suited to sit in a 2-3 zone and try to beat you, but I hope they have fun.”

The Sharks took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter and led 53-47 before Jamestown began its rally. Red Raiders junior Alyson Canfield hit a 3-pointer with 5:00 remaining and then scored in the lane to make it 53-52. Three possessions later, senior Mickia Freeney scored in the lane to give Jamestown its first lead in a long time.
Senior Marley Drake’s 3-pointer with 2:47 left in the game gave her team a 57-55 lead, but that would be the last field goal for the Red Raiders, who went 0 for 10 from the field and 1 of 4 from the free-throw line while turning the ball over once in their final six possessions.
“We’d like to get Marley, Mickia and Alyson all kinds of open 3s, but we’ll see,” Ricker said. “People know, so we have to get better as coaches of finding ways.”
For the game, Jamestown was 20 of 66 (30.3%) from the field, including 8 of 29 (27.6%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 26 times. Drake led the Red Raiders with 17 points and six steals; Canfield had 15 points and six rebounds; Freeney had 10 points and five assists; and senior Kylie O’Brien had 10 points and 25 rebounds.
“We need Kylie to give us some more offense. She did, and she missed some free throws. Oh well,” Ricker said. “That girl gives us 20 rebounds every night and gives everything she has. I could care less about that.”
The Sharks led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a basket from senior Mariah Huss with 11 seconds remaining. Jamestown tied the game at 18 early in the second quarter and briefly took a three-point lead on a 3-pointer by Marley Drake, but Sacred Heart scored the final four points of the first half and led 34-29 at the break.
“(Marley) and Alyson, if either of them shoots that 3, it’s a great thing. Mickia can shoot it too,” Ricker said. “They really stretched their zone. They didn’t play it in either of their first two games so I did a poor job of having us ready for that.”
The Sharks’ lead grew to as many as eight on a 3-pointer by Trapper midway through the third quarter before an 8-0 run by the Red Raiders tied the game at 42-all with just over three minutes left in the period. The outburst was capped by a Freeney 3-pointer.
“They started catching it much closer to the baseline, which is our goal. For a little period where we had a good run, they were really struggling to get it to the foul line and out,” Ricker said. ” … We’re going to press you 100 times. You’re going to break the press, we know that, but we want to make you keep going.”
A pair of free throws by sophomore Anna Ratchuk and another bucket from Trapper gave Sacred Heart a 48-44 lead heading into the final quarter.
“Their role players made some of the plays down the stretch,” Ricker said. “We have four girls who can score 25 points any night or every night. We just have to get better at it and get into better shape. … We feel like we’re just getting started.”
