Portville’s Welty Sweeps Individual CCAA D2 East Awards
Portville ran away with the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 East title this spring.
Mallory Welty was a big reason why.
The Panthers senior pitcher was recently named the league’s Player of the Year and Pitcher of the year as coaches named their all-star team. Portville finished the season 17-2 overall, including a perfect 12-0 in the league.
Welty was joined on the First Team by three teammates: sophomore catcher Mattison Foster, junior shortstop/center fielder Teagan Kosinski and her sister, senior utility player Mia Welty.
Ellicottville’s Matt Finn was named the league’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to a 9-8 record, including 7-5 in the league. Ellicottville lost to Westfield in the Section VI Class D championship game.
Eagles senior third baseman Jocelyn Wyatt, junior catcher Allison Rowland and senior first baseman Harley Ficek were named to the First Team.
North Collins had a pair of players named to the First Team: junior catcher Hailey Jasinski and junior pitcher Sophie Vanstrom.
Salamanca senior shortstop Morgan Maybee and senior pitcher Emma Brown; Cattaraugus-Little Valley senior shortstop Alex Minnekine; West Valley junior shortstop Lauren Frascella and junior pitcher Colleen Keller; and Franklinville junior shortstop Megan Jackson rounded out the First Team.
Cattaraugus-Little Valley was honored with the Team Sportsmanship Award with Kora Sentz as the Timberwolves’ individual representative. Other Sportsmanship Award honorees were: Ellicottville’s Kyleigh Dimpfl, Franklinville’s Alena Murphy, North Collins’ Jaylee Jimerson, Portville’s Avery Defazio, Salamanca’s Rylee Grant and West Valley’s Olympia Leckey.
