Red Raiders Split In Clarence

Boys Roll Past Red Devils; Girls Suffer Last-Second Loss

CLARENCE — The Jamestown boys basketball team was in a sharing mood Friday night.

How much so?

Well, in their 79-62 Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 victory over Clarence, the Red Raiders (8-1, 7-0) dished out 25 assists on 29 made baskets.

“We ran a few sets here and there,” said Jamestown coach Ben Drake, “but a lot of it was off our defense and transition. When we had some numbers we were making bounce passes across the lane to somebody else.”

Jaylen Butera led the Red Raiders with 18 points to go along with five assists, four steals and four rebounds. Andre Maple added 13 points and five assists; Jaral Farmer collected 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots; Sean Paige chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals; Trey Drake had 8 points, five assists and three steals; and Drayce Garland contributed 8 points, four assists and three steals.

“We played hard tonight,” Coach Drake said. “Again, we were very aggressive at both ends of the floor. We were up 19 at halftime and scored 44 points, but I didn’t think we played very well (to that point). … We missed a lot of opportunities around the basket in the first half.”

But he certainly didn’t mind the way his team found the open man.

“Every game it’s somebody different,” he said. “All of these guys have been pretty consistent. Every game we get several guys who are between 8 and 16 points. That’s been good.”

Clarence (5-4, 3-3) was led by Grayson White with 20 points, Jake Metzger with 15, Julius Perry with 11 and Alex Quinn with 10.

Jamestown returns to action at 7 tonight when it entertains Park at Jamestown Community College in a nonleague game.

“It will be a good game for us,” Coach Drake said. “It’s something different. I’ve never coached on the JCC court before.”
