FREWSBURG — Olivia Herrington was just too much to handle in the circle, at the plate and in the field on Tuesday night.

The sophomore struck out nine batters in five innings of work, cracked a triple and a single with an RBI on offense, and added some strong defensive work at shortstop to lead Chautauqua Lake (4-0, 4-0) to an 11-1 win over Frewsburg (4-4, 3-4) in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West action.

Despite getting a late start to the year following a strong volleyball campaign and suffering two injuries to their starting lineup, the Thunderbirds have rolled out to a 4-0 start and will now travel to face Maple Grove on Thursday.

“I knew that Chautauqua Lake was just getting started. I think they’ve only had three games this year because of the volleyball kind of putting them behind,” Frewsburg head coach Jon Blanchard said. “So I didn’t really know where they were. We had seven games coming in here with one nonleaguer. We can play with anyone on any day but (Herrington) did a great job on the mound and controlled the game really well.”

Chautauqua Lake would get on the board in the first inning as Herrington opened up with a single and moved to second on a fielder’s choice before sprinting home on a throwing error.

The Bears would battle back in the second when pitcher Reagan Chitester plated Peyton Yost, who made the most of a pair of stolen bases, but that would be the extent of the Frewsburg offense the rest of the way.

The Thunderbirds took advantage of a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error in the second inning, plating Cayzlee Johnson to make it 2-1, and would add on three more runs in the third.

Herrington was struck by a pitch to start off that inning, and would move into scoring position with a pair of stolen bases before coming home on an error. That was followed by an RBI triple from Johnson, and two more runs on errors.

“I’m really pleased,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Sue Teets said. “We had to call up a jayvee player. We are two down because of injuries. I juggled my whole lineup and moved people around so I didn’t know how things would go. We had a short week to practice but I feel like their heads were where they needed to be — a little rattled at times. I said ‘just play your game.’ That’s all I want you to do is get the ball in play and make things happen, and they did that.”

The lead grew to 7-1 in the fourth after a double by Tatem Zemcik and an RBI double from Lucy Gates, a seventh-grade callup due to injury.

Johnson would relieve Herrington in the sixth, striking out one and giving up no hits in relief. Heading to shortstop, Herrington quickly showed her versatility in the field with a pair of nice throws.

“She’s an awesome shortstop, I will tell you that,” Teets said. “Probably one of the most fluid that I’ve seen in the league — just smooth, good glove. I could probably put her anywhere and it’s great. This is the first year I’ve had two pitchers, literally in all of the year’s I’ve coached.”

Jenna Waters grabbed a single and a double with an RBI in the win, Johnson had two triples with three RBIs, while Mallory Morrison, Hannah Bretz (double) and Zemcik (double) all had one hit.

Chitester and Peyton Yost would swap time in the circle for Frewsburg, with Chitester picking up six strikeouts in five innings while Yost struck out one and had no walks.
