Maple Grove Hurler Ks 14 In Five Innings

BEMUS POINT — Tucker Fenton allowed two hits and an unearned run in five innings while striking out 14 to lead Maple Grove to a season-opening 7-1 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West victory over Chautauqua Lake.
The Thunderbirds (3-1, 0-1) led 1-0 for much of the game until the Red Dragons (1-0, 1-0) scored all seven of their runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Fenton had four hits and Colin McPherson had two while Tristan Loomis, Josh Lockwood and Jacob Vaillancourt added singles for Maple Grove.
Nate Engdahl started on the mound and struck out eight for Chautauqua Lake. Kalen Miller had two singles and scored the Thunderbirds’ lone while Lawson Ormsby added a double.
The guys have great chemistry and were eager to take the field,” Maple Grove head coach Ryan Lucas said. “They played hard and showed some grit early in the season. I look forward to seeing more from these guys.”

MARAUDERS’ BATS COME ALIVE
DUNKIRK — Nick Zatorski carried a no-hitter through four innings before being pulled due to a pitch count as Dunkirk beat Olean 14-3 in five innings of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West baseball action Monday at Al Stuhlmiller Field.
Alex Ahlstrom went 3 for 3 with two triples and a double to lead the Marauders offense.
Ahlstrom tripled on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning and scored on a Mike Norton RBI single. Dunkirk then scored seven runs in the second inning. Nick Marsowicz was hit by a pitch and Tanner Schrantz walked before Javier DeJesus hit an RBI single.
Bryson Travis and Norton followed with two-run singles before Phil Messina hit an RBI single and Donavon Lockett hit a sacrifice fly.
“We jumped on them. We had a disappointing loss against St. Francis on Thursday. We were prepared to go today,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “Our bats really came alive. We had some quality at-bats and hit some good line drives.”
Norton, Messina and Travis all finished with two hits with one of Messina’s being a double.
“We stung the ball really well today,” Jagoda said.
Zatorski struck out seven and walked two for the Marauders (5-1, 3-0). Mike Porpiglia got the first two outs of the fifth inning before Scott Korzenski relieved and got the final out with one pitch.
Thomas Bates tripled and scored on a Jason Brooks RBI single for the Huskies (2-2, 2-2).
WALK-OFF WIN FOR PINE VALLEY
SOUTH DAYTON — Wayne Libby scored the winning run on Bryce Sercu’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Pine Valley edged Randolph 7-6 in Division 2 East action.
Libby reached on an infield single to third base and moved to second on an error. Libby then went to third on a passed ball before scoring on Sercu’s grounder to first base.
Travis West went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs; Sercu went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored; and Cameron Hayes doubled for the Panthers (1-2, 1-0).
David Hunt earned the win, throwing five innings in relief while allowing two hits and three runs.
Pine Valley took a 6-4 lead with a four-run sixth inning before the Cardinals (2-2, 0-1) tied the game in the top of the seventh. After two errors and a walk, Wyatt Adams hit a two-out, two-run single.
Ashton Bushey hit an RBI double in the first inning and Xander Hind hit a second-inning RBI double to give Randolph an early 3-0 lead.
BEARS PULL AWAY
WESTFIELD — Traden Gray settled in after a three-run first inning and threw a six-inning six-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Frewsburg beat Westfield 14-3 in Division 2 West action.
The Bears (3-2, 1-0) opened the game with a four-run first inning before the Wolverines answered with three runs of their own. Frewsburg put up another five runs in the second, three in the fourth and two in the sixth to win its third straight game.
Ryan Schrecengost went 3 for 4 with three doubles, an RBI and three runs scored; Jack Yost had a double and a triple; and Trent Bjork had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Bears. Jonah SanAngelo also doubled, Garrett Brink walked three times and Payton Dustin scored three runs.
Carter Russo had two hits and drove in a run while Brad Babcock doubled for Westfield (0-2, 0-1).
Easton Seger struck out six in 3 2/3 innings before Russo struck out two in the final 2 1/3 innings on the mound.
SALAMANCA PREVAILS LATE
FRANKLINVILLE — Salamanca and Franklinville played 0-0 ball into the seventh inning before the Warriors beat the Panthers 5-2 in Division 1 East action.
Salamanca went ahead 2-0 on a passed ball that turned into two runs when the throw to the pitcher covering home plate got away. Harley Hoag and Lucas McKenna added RBI triples and Jackson Ross had an RBI hit in the inning to make it 5-0.
Franklinville got on the board in the bottom half of the frame when Logan Frank had an RBI triple for the Panthers’ first hit of the game.
Hoag threw the first 3 2/3 no-hit innings, striking out nine and walking three before Ross threw 2 1/3 innings of no-hit ball, walking three and striking out four. Zaron Tucker picked up the win in relief, striking out two in the seventh inning.
Blake Frank threw six innings of three-hit ball, walking five and striking out eight for Franklinville, which was playing its season opener.
Tucker and Ross each had two hits for Salamanca.
EAGLES COME UP SHORT
ELLICOTTVILLE — Portville took control with a four-run fifth inning en route to an 8-3 Division 1 East victory.
Maxx Yehl hit an RBI double and Luke Petryszak followed with an RBI single in the decisive frame.
Petryszak led the Panthers offense going 3 for 4 while Yehl was 2 for 3 with a double. Joe Long had two hits and an RBI.
Long threw four innings of three-hit ball while striking out six. Michael Cole followed with three innings of three-hit ball while also striking out six.
Lucas Marsh had three hits and an RBI while Ryan DeKay had two hits and two RBIs for Ellicottville.
“We’re 1-2, but we’ve lost some tight ballgames,” Ellicottville head coach Chris Mendell said. “Portville is a really solid team. … We’re competing, we’rej ust not seeing the results. I think they’ll come eventually.”
DeKay and Clayton Rowland combined to strike out six for Ellicottville.
SPARTANS DOWN JAMESTOWN
Noah Pohrte had three hits and three runs scored to lead a 14-hit Williamsville North attack as the Spartans beat Jamestown 18-5 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 action.
Kyle Finn struck out seven in four innings and also tripled while Max Diamond added a double for Williamsville North (6-1, 4-0).
Riley Piazza hit a solo home run to left field during the third inning; Juan Matos doubled; and Ayden Bonta had two hits, including a double, for the Red Raiders (1-3, 1-3).
EAGLES BEAT T’WOLVES
NORTH COLLINS — North Collins moved to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in East Division play with a 10-3 win over Cattaraugus-Little Valley.
Derek Ebersol got the start on the hill, pitching three innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs while Asher Parnitzke and Tony Puckhaber finished things off for the Eagles.
Tyler Witkowski had a single and three RBIs while Puckhaber added a single and two RBIs.
North Collins took advantage of several errors by the Timberwolves to plate runners.
