Bonnies Clinch First Outright A-10 Regular-Season Title

ST. BONAVENTURE — During a press conference with members of the media last week on Zoom, St. Bonaventure junior Dominick Welch allowed himself to admire the trophy representing the program’s 2015-16 share of that season’s Atlantic 10 regular-season title housed inside the Bona basketball offices.

“Just looking at this trophy,” he said, “makes me want to run down to practice right now.”

As it turned out, the Bonnies would indeed secure their own trophy, but they would learn of their championship at practice — thanks to a result elsewhere in the conference. Only this time, the Bonnies won’t need to share their accomplishment with any other team.

St. Bonaventure clinched its first outright Atlantic 10 regular season championship in program history by way of a VCU loss at Davidson in the Rams’ regular-season finale. At 11-3, even with one game to play, the Bonnies have secured the regular-season crown and the top spot in the upcoming A-10 Tournament. Earlier in the week, the Bonnies scored two huge A-10 wins by sweeping a home-and-home series with Davidson to reach double-digit conference victories for the seventh consecutive year, the longest active streak in the league.

The Bonnies (13-3, 11-3) dominated George Washington on Friday night for their largest margin of victory in Atlantic 10 play during the program’s history, 88-41. That win left second-place VCU needing a win Saturday to keep its regular-season title hopes alive, but Davidson prevailed on its home court, 65-57.

SBU previously claimed a share of the league crown in 2015-16, owning part of a three-way tie, but this season marks the first time the Brown and White earned sole possession of the top spot.

A regular-season conference title becomes the latest resume builder in Bona’s bid for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to five victories against teams in the Top 105 of the NCAA NET rankings, the Bonnies jumped six spots to No. 29 in Saturday’s NET rankings and are the A-10’s top-ranked team.

“For over 40 years (in the A-10), there have been some great players here, but you guys are the first ones (to win an A-10 regular-season title outright). That says it all,” head coach Mark Schmidt told his team prior to Saturday’s practice. “But, you should be hungrier now to finish the season and take care of business. We accomplished a goal of winning the Atlantic 10 regular-season title, but there’s still more work to do.”

One game remains on the regular-season schedule for Bona — a home date with Dayton at 5 p.m.today on ESPNU.

The Atlantic 10 Tournament is slated to be held March 3-6 in Richmond with the Bonnies earning a double-bye into Friday’s quarterfinals on NBC Sports Network. After a week off, the two remaining teams will square off in Dayton for the Atlantic 10 Championship Game on Sunday, March 14 on CBS. Full A-10 seeding and bracket information will be released at the conclusion of all regular-season games Monday night.
