ROCHESTER, Minn. — Relegated to the consolation bracket after two matches Thursday, Jamestown Community College came out on the wrong side of a meeting with No. 7 Harper College at the NJCAA Division III women’s volleyball championships Friday at the Rochester Regional Sports Center.

The Hawks beat the Jayhawks 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-11 to advance to today’s 3 p.m. fifth-place match.

“We struggled in serve receive again. Harper was extremely aggressive on serve and kind of threw us off our groove in the first game,” Jamestown CC head coach Ashley Lund said. “We took a pretty substantial lead in the second game, but just had a few costly errors. … We pretty much started every game down 4-0 or 5-0, but really fought for that third game. We played really well and started to come around on our passing.”

With their second loss of the tournament, the sixth-seeded Jayhawks dropped into today’s 1 p.m. seventh-place match against familiar foe Jefferson CC of Watertown. Jamestown CC swept two meetings earlier this season against the ninth-seeded Cannoneers.

“They are playing really well this weekend,” Lund said. “As long as we play our game, we are going to be fine. We know what they have to offer. I’m just hoping we can use the information from the past to go out and take seventh place.”

Individually Friday, Jenna Caskey had 11 kills, two aces, 17 digs and two blocks; Karleigh Haines had an ace, nine kills, 13 digs and two blocks; Maddy Russo had an ace, 22 assists, a kill, 14 digs and a block; Megan Gominiak had four kills, a dig and five blocks; and Cameryn Hawkins had five aces and 23 digs.

“Our defense was pretty great today. Hawkins had a great day, digging everything that came her way,” Lund said. “She really has taken it to a new level. She’s been lights-out lately and today she was great on serve receive … and she had five aces when serving. Even the Harper coach pulled me aside and said how impressed he was with (Hawkins) on the court.”
