Frewsburg Girls To Face ‘One-Of-A-Kind’ Talent

Chloe DeLyser has scored 329 goals during her six-year varsity career at Marion. In contrast, the entire 19-girl Frewsburg roster has combined for 61 career goals.

Those numbers won’t mean a thing when the Black Knights and Bears meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C girls soccer Far West Regional at Williamsville East High School.

Frewsburg, the Section VI champion, has scored just four goals in four playoff games, beating Cattaraugus-Little Valley, 2-0, in the prequarterfinals, Holland, 2-1, on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, Maple Grove, 1-0, in overtime in the semifinals and Westfield/Brocton, 1-0, on penalty kicks in the sectional final.

“She’s obviously a one-of-a-kind talent. … We’re just looking forward to the challenge,” Frewsburg head coach Scott Stone said Wednesday evening following practice at the Frewsburg Soccer Club’s facility in the former Allen Park Ice Rink.

Stone added: “We’ve been tracking who we could possibly play for the last couple of weeks. She’s been on our radar … I feel like it could be one heck of a storyline. Why not us? We’re having a special season and we are just trying to continue our run.”

Marion, the Section V C2 champion, has had no problem scoring goals during its four-game trip to a title. The Black Knights beat Bishop Kearney, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, Bolivar-Richburg, 5-2, in the semifinals and Wheatland-Chili, 3-2, in the final before an 8-3 victory over Warsaw on Tuesday night in the Class C crossover game.

DeLyser is a star. No doubt about it.

The Ohio State commit created headlines last month when she scored her 317th goal, seemingly breaking the national record. But while New York state recognizes all goals scored at the varsity level, the National Federation of State High School Associations does not, citing the fact that DeLyser, a senior, played two years of varsity during her seventh- and eighth-grade years.

“We usually don’t change our defense no matter who we play … but she’s a special talent, so we’re definitely going to have to move things around and have a special game plan for her,” Stone said. ” … She’s very skilled, she’s fast, she’s everything that you’d expect her to be. We’re going to try to give her some different looks, try to make her uncomfortable and just make it as hard for her to beat us as we possibly can.”

DeLyser and her 73 goals scored this season alone create a problem for the opposition and Frewsburg will have to account for her every second she’s on the field Saturday. But she isn’t the only goal scorer for Marion. DeLyser is just one of four double-digit goal scorers for the Black Knights with Abigail Marotta (19), Brooke Guerin (15) and Alaina Taylor (10) also reaching the plateau.

“Defense wins championships. Every team I’ve ever coached, we’ve built from the back. That’s been our identity from opening day,” Stone said. “From that standpoint, we are not really changing anything. We might change a couple of things tactically, but our mindset stays the same: if they can’t score, they can’t win.”

Stone will again lean on his stellar defensive unit of seniors Rachel Annis and Amanda Dilts, junior Peyton Yost and sophomore Reagan Chitester, who have combined with junior goalkeeper Madison Voty to allow just nine goals in 20 games this fall.

“We know they have one of the most prolific scorers ever over there,” Stone said, “but our back four is pretty good, too, so we’ll see how we match up.”

If Frewsburg is able to keep the potent Marion offense at bay, the Bears are still going to have to find a goal or two of their own.

While Stone’s team is comfortable and capable of playing in tied or one-goal games — the Bears did it 10 times this season, winning six and tying one — he likely doesn’t want a trip to the state Final Four resting on another penalty-kick shootout.

“Every game in the playoffs I felt like we controlled possession,” Stone said. ” … We want to hold the ball and keep it away from them. We have some good players, too.”

Sophomore Samantha Annis leads the Bears with seven goals while sophomore Makenna McBride has four. Freshman Ashlyn Samuelson and sophomore Rachael Kerhli have each scored three times while sophomore Raena Bird, Rachel Annis, freshman Alex Hultberg, sophomore Nora Edwards and freshman Jacey Cappa have each scored twice.

“Our top five or six on the attack are going to have to work their butts off to find some gritty goals,” Stone said. “It’s going to be very important for our strikers and midfielders to constantly be in attack mode, and make them play a little defense, too.”

DeLyser will be looking to cap her stellar career with a state championship that has eluded Marion since winning it all in 2010. Frewsburg last advanced to the state semifinals, which will take place Nov. 16-17 in the Cortland area, in 2009.

“This year, it was really Section VI championship or bust. That was our goal from Day 1,” Stone said. ” … We believe we can win. Even if we are the only people who believe we can win, we are looking to shock some people on Saturday.”
