Ronald “Bubba” Brown threw a complete game with 18 strikeouts as Brocton won the Class D Far West Regional, 6-4, over Honeoye on Saturday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. The victory sends the Bulldogs to this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals for the second straight season. He struck out eight straight from the end of the first to the start of the fourth innings, including nine of the first 11 batters of the game. Brown also had three hits and an RBI at the plate

Maple Grove

Batting out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup, Tessa Warner had three of Maple Grove’s 16 hits during a 14-6 win over Portville on Monday as the Red Dragons wrapped up the Section VI Class C softball championship at St. Bonaventure University’s Joyce Field. Her biggest hit was a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning that made it 13-4. She finished with two doubles and four RBIs.

John Swabik won the Division II pentathlon with 3,411 points at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track & Field Championhips this past weekend at Middletown High School. Swabik ran the 110-meter hurdles in 15.9 seconds for 744 points, cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump for 740 points, threw 37 feet, 6 inches in the shot put for 572 points, reached 19 feet, 3.25 inches in the long jump for 559 points and finished the 1,500 meters in 4:22.32 for 796 points. Cameron Barmore won the Division II high jump, clearing 6 feet, 7 inches. He missed the federation title by 1 inch as Henninger’s Kwamere White cleared 6 feet, 8 inches.

Jericha Petrella finished second in the Division II 400 meters with a time of 57.55 seconds at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track & Field Championships this past weekend at Middletown High School. The winner of the race was Eve Balseiro of Bronxville, who clocked a 57.06.
