The challenges that come along with relocating to a new city are a demanding transition for any sports franchise, especially when added on to all of the normal offseason moves that need to be made every year.

In addition to all of the normal tasks, such as filling out a roster, creating practice schedules and dealing with any staffing changes, there are a whole host of other assignments that range from housing players to facility management.

Now 23 games into this North American Hockey League season, the Jamestown Rebels are continuing to settle into their new home at Northwest Arena–and the results are beginning to show.

“We got here August 30, I would say, and went to the Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Camp, got to know each other well,” said Rebels forward Alex Frye after a mid-day practice on Thursday. “It took a couple of weeks to get used to the billet families. Everyone was just changing families and you have new teammates and new roommates. I would say we adjusted well. It is a good town to be in, a great junior hockey town. The fans are treating us pretty well.”

Frye and the Rebels have started to return the favor to their new fans over the most recent stretch of the season. Jamestown currently sits at 13-8-1-1, tied for second place in the East Division, and is riding a four-game winning streak after claiming seven wins in the past 10 games.

What head coach Joe Coombs has been most concerned with throughout the first stretch of the season is getting his players to compete at a high level on every shift without being subject to the emotional ups and downs of each game.

Through a combination of roster moves and having more time to build chemistry, progress towards that goal has been noticeable.

“I thought that we played better. I thought we were more consistent over the 60 minutes,” said Coombs of his team’s 7-1 and 4-0 wins over Maryland last weekend.

Playing in all 23 games so far this year, Frye leads the Rebels with 12 goals and 10 assists. The Hudsonville, Michigan native has also enjoyed the recent addition of Colin Schmidt to his line, who has seven points in 11 games after being added to Jamestown’s roster.

“I think that Colin Schmidt has added a little bit to that line with (Jim) Glynn and Frye,” said Coombs. “Glynn is a good 200-foot player as Frye is. Schmidt is a pretty gifted offensive player and Frye is a competitor.”

Rebels head coach Joe Coombs, right, saw his team post 7-1 and 4-0 victories over Maryland last weekend.

Adding to the strong play of that line have been defensive leaders like Alex Roy and Seth Bergeron, who sits at plus 12 on the year in 13 games after returning from injury.

“I think that Seth has probably played a little bit beyond my expectations,” said Coombs. “I think that he has settled in and played 10 games where eight of them have been pretty good. He’s skating well and he’s a competitive kid to begin with.”

The Rebels will look to keep their current streak alive this weekend as they travel to play New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3:10 p.m. on Sunday.

The Titans are currently tied with the Rebels for second place in the East with 28 points, holding a record of 14-10. New Jersey claimed a pair of games against Jamestown in early October.

“They’re a good team, they’ve got some speed, but I wouldn’t say they beat us,” Frye said of the Titans. “We kind of beat ourselves in those games. We’ve really just got to work on managing the puck there. They kind of just take advantage of the mistakes that we make and capitalize on them, so we have to eliminate our mistakes and work on managing the puck. We try not to treat any game as bigger than another game. We just treat it like a normal weekend and are going to try and get four points.”
