Purslow, Crist Spark Red Dragons Past Fredonia, 60-52

Truman Purslow scored 16 points and Carson Crist added 15 as Maple Grove (4-2, 1-1) held off Fredonia, 60-52, Tuesday night in a Division 1 West basketball game.

The foul line proved decisive as the Red Dragons made 20-of-31 attempts while Fredonia was 12-of-19. Simon Olson and Purslow each made six connections from the charity stripe for the winners.

Maple Grove led, 31-21, at halftime as Crist had 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Purslow contributed seven points.

Fredonia got within three points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t take the lead.

Nate Stewart scored a game-high 19 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Hillbillies.

Purslow snared nine rebounds for the Red Dragons.

DELAHOY DELIVERS

PANAMA — Tom Delahoy got the game-winning basket on the final seconds to make Panama a winner in Division 3 West boys basketball.

Delahoy sank a bucket with 22 seconds remaining as the Panthers increased their league record to 2-1 and 4-5 overall by getting past Clymer (0-3, 3-5), 67-66.

Dominic Spontaneo hit a pair of big 3-pointers down the stretch for Panama.

Delahoy was the Panama scoring leader with 15 points followed by Spontaneo with 12 points, and Cameron Barmore and Mitch Hovey with 11 points. Barmore, a sophomore, had 10 rebounds and five blocks while Hovey added six assists.

Jordan Wade played an outstanding game for Clymer by scoring 23 points.

WILDCATS RALLY FOR WIN

SHERMAN — The second half proved to be the difference for Sherman in a 53-49 win over Westfield in Division 3 West basketball action.

Down by a 34-22 margin in the second half, the Wildcats went on an 18-1 run to rally for the victory and improved their record to 3-0 in the league and 4-4 overall.

Jared Gleason scored 10 points and Tanner Ramsey added eight during the 22-8 third quarter to give the Wildcats a 40-35 lead.

Both Gleason and Ramsey scored 16 points. Ramsey also had six steals and five assists while Mike Beatman had four steals.

Ryan Jafarjian scored 13 points, Shawn Horr contributed 11 and Evan Hauser added nine for Westfield.

DUNKIRK ROLLS

DUNKIRK — The Dunkirk Marauders started off the new year in impressive fashion, defeating the visiting Falconer Golden Falcons, 70-30, in a CCAA West 1 game.

The Marauders continued to pull away in the third quarter, highlighted by a 20-4 run spanning the first five minutes of the quarter. Dunkirk led 59-27 after the third quarter, and kept its regular starting five out for the remainder of the game.

Dunkirk’s balanced scoring was led by Andre Lockett with 14 points, along with five rebounds. Noah Sobilo had 10 points, while Darnell Butts had nine in limited action.

Rivera and Sabien Smith each had eight rebounds to lead the Marauders, who had 48 rebounds as a team. Ethan Yannie (eight points, six rebounds) and Kayin Odebralski (seven points, five rebounds) were also singled out by Krenzer for their performances.

“I was proud of the kids who were in there, with their ability to finish,” said Krenzer.

Dunkirk (6-4, 3-0) heads to Olean on Thursday, in what will likely be one of the Marauders’ toughest opponents this season. Falconer hosts Maple Grove on Thursday.

BEARS TRIM BROCTON

BROCTON — An 8-0 run just before halftime proved to be the difference n the Frewsburg Bears’ 51-42 victory over Brocton (1-8, 0-2) in CCAA West 2 action.

Brad Nelson of Frewsburg (4-4, 2-1) tied Brocton’s Ronald Brown for the game scoring lead, each player netting 17 points. Quinn Conlan had 15 points for the Bears while Riley Rivera scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Brocton’s leading rebounder was Charles Rexford with eight boards, while fellow Bulldog Hunter Rizzo had three steals.
