Shirley Gerring Pillar, 78, of Russell, died peacefully Thursday in her home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Shirley’s capacity for meaningful conversation will be deeply missed. She was outgoing and compassionate. Her bright personality brought out the best in her neighbors, friends, and family. A devoted animal lover, Shirley cared for many Sheltie dogs and cats. Her adopted fur family– Shelties Dolly and Buddy, and cats, Ms. Kitty and Cheesecake–were her pride and joy. She loved spending time in her beautiful backyard garden with her husband, Jim, and her pets.
Born June 15, 1947, in Jamestown, she was the second child of Harold and Edith Swan Gerring. She was a graduate of Bemus Point High School and attended Jamestown Community College. She worked for many years for Cummins Engine.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jim Pillar, and nine nieces and nephews: Doug (Tina) Lindquist of Bemus Point, N.Y.; Craig (Katey) Lindquist of Warren, Pa.; Michele Gerring of Bemus Point, N.Y.; Nicole Gerring (Nathaniel Jachim), of Dearborn, M.I.; Rob (Kristen) Gerring of Tequesta, Florida; Stephen (Jessica) Gerring of Kirkwood, M.O.; Marissa (Brady) Cunningham of Commerce City, C.O.; Mark (Alexa) Sprandle of Warren, P.A., and Marlea (Noah) Heeter of Sheffield, Pa. She was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Sandy (Bruce) Lindquist, and her brother, Bob (Meridith) Gerring.
She had a strong Christian faith and attended local churches. The family would like to thank the medical teams and caregivers at Roswell Park, Warren General Hospital, Warren Manor, and Hospice of Warren County. Memorials may be made to Paws Along The River Humane Society of Warren or a charity of choice.
The Funeral will be held at 12 Noon Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 11-12 Noon prior to the service. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
