MAYVILLE — Ronald E. Wood, 87, of Mayville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, at the Absolut Care of Westfield in Westfield, NY.

He was born March 30, 1935, in Jamestown, NY the son of the late Harland and Frances Johnson Wood.

Ron proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1955 to 1957, receiving a “Good Conduct Award”. After his honorable discharge, he earned a BS and his Principal Certification from Buffalo State College and St Bonaventure University. He then worked as the Shop Teacher at Sherman Central School before becoming the Principal for BOCES Hewes Educational Center in Ashville, NY.

He was a proud member of the NRA, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Jamestown War Vets. Ron loved the outdoors, wildlife, hunting, nature, and was an avid collector of guns and old coins. He was also a two-time World Skeet Champion.

He is survived by his six nieces: Joette (Randolph) Henderson of Hartfield, NY, Ann (Louis) Morales of Edgewater, FL, Bonnie (Mark) Webster of King, NC, Denise (Brian) Hartley of Mooresville, NC, Dawn Okerlund of Westfield, NY and Danielle DeHaven of Raleigh, NC, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife; Gretchen Bryant Wood, a sister; Lois Sanderson, a brother; Paul Wood, and a nephew; Daryl Sanderson.

A private graveside service with military honors was held at the Mayville Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a future date and will be announced.
