Martin “Marty” Joseph O’Boyle of Jamestown, N.Y., passed on April 22, 2020.
Marty was born Nov. 7, 1933, in the Bronx, N. Y., the son of Anthony and Anna (McSharry) O’Boyle, one of nine children in a large Irish Catholic Family.
A gifted athlete and scholar, Marty attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., where he stood out academically.
After graduation, Marty began working at Combustion Engineering (C-E) in Windsor, Conn., working on the development of some of the nation’s first nuclear submarines. Marty was later recruited by Westinghouse (Nuclear Division) out of the Pittsburgh, Pa., area and relocated his family there. He went on to do graduate work in engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Marty worked for years as a Nuclear Engineer for Westinghouse and is credited for his role in the development of numerous patents in the nuclear energy field. Through his work, Marty traveled extensively to Japan, Brussels, Belgium, and elsewhere. A lover of technology and philosophy, Marty spent his later years consulting, reading and working on computer projects.
Marty is survived by his daughter, Kathleen O’Boyle of Delmont, Pa.; his son, Kevin O’Boyle (Lijie Huang) of League City, Texas; his grandchildren: Anna O’Boyle and Ian O’Boyle; his siblings: Joan Mahoney, Margaret Holland, Nora O’Boyle and Patrick O’Boyle; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
At a later date, a private ceremony will be held for the immediate family at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.
