Katherine Warner Akers
Katherine Warner Akers, 91, formerly of Madison, N.J., and Mayville, N.Y., died Nov. 26, 2014, at home in Williamstown, Mass. She was born in Titusville, Pa., on Nov. 28, 1923.
Kay volunteered for several organizations including the American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood of Central and Greater Northern New Jersey, the Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey, as well as the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging, and as an ombudsman for the Lutheran Home, Jamestown, N.Y.
Kay also worked professionally as a fund developer for Cheshire Home, the first such facility built in the U.S. providing residence for young adults with lifelong physical disabilities. Her career also included work at the Jersey Battered Women’s Ser-vices, Morristown, N.J., and Amicae, Jamestown, N.Y.
Kay is survived by her husband, John of 64 years; a daughter, Susan (Richard), Denville, N.J.; sons: John Jr. (Fran), Centennial, Colo., James (Mary Pat), Great Barrington, Mass., and Richard (Stephanie) in Florham Park, N.J.; six grandchildren: Austin, Emily, Charlie, Natalie, Ian and Tom Akers; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters; and a grandson, Spencer Akers.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Sweetwood, Williamstown, Mass.
