Two Charged After Puppy Found Dead, Other Pets In Squalor

Darian McCauley

Two Jamestown residents are facing charges after a search warrant led to the discovery of malnourished pets and a deceased puppy.

Jamestown police reported that Kristen A. McCauley, 42, and Darian A. McCauley, 18, were charged with eight counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failing to provide proper sustenance and city code violations for unlicensed and unvaccinated dogs.

Officers said they had been conducting an animal neglect investigation at a Peach Street residence, but had been unsuccessful in making contact with the tenants and obtaining permission to check on the animals. In order to check on the status of the animals, a search warrant was executed at the address on Monday.

Officers were able to make contact with the tenants and then located four adult dogs, one puppy and two cats living inside the residence. One of the adult dogs was in need of immediate veterinary care and a deceased puppy was also located on the property.

Officers found the apartment was filled with accumulated feces, urine, bugs and refuse. Officers determined that the McCauleys were not able to provide sanitary living conditions and proper sustenance for the animals.

The Jamestown Police Department and Dog Control Officer were assisted by the Chautauqua County Humane Society and the city Department of Development during this investigation. The animals were removed from the McCauleys’ custody.

After arraignment, both were released with tickets to return to court.
