FLUVANNA — Police are looking into the cause of a “suspicious” fire that destroyed an unoccupied Moon Road home in Fluvanna late Wednesday.
The blaze was reported at about 10:20 p.m. and drew firefighters from a half dozen departments in the county.
In a message posted early Thursday to Facebook, the Fluvanna Fire Department said members responded to 3384 Moon Road with smoke and flames showing. The department thanked the following mutual aid fire departments that assisted: Ellery Center, Gerry, Bemus Point, Sinclairville, Chautauqua, Ashville and the county FAST Team. Crews returned back to the scene at about 5:45 a.m. after the fire rekindled; they remained there until about 7:30 a.m.
Only two front walls and the remnants of a fireplace remained standing. A structure behind the property did not appear to be damaged as a result of the large fire.
Members of the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team were at the home Thursday morning. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and Ellicott Police Department said.
