Two city residents taken into custody in connection with last week’s fatal shooting on Prendergast Avenue have been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence.
Jamestown police on Monday announced the arrests of 32-year-old Joseph A. Fontanez Walker and 22-year-old Kevin L. Roldan-Pantojas. In a news release, the department said the pair was tied to the Aug. 19 shooting incident that resulted in the death of Jesus Batista Perez and injuries to another male flown to a nearby hospital.
Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt on Thursday confirmed Fontanez Walker has been charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class A misdemeanor, and tampering with physical evidence, an E felony. Because neither charge qualifies for bail being set under state law, the Jamestown man has been released.
Roldan-Pantojas has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C violent felony, and tampering with physical evidence. Bail was set at $200,000 cash or $400,000 bond.
An investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be announced at a later date.
Police were alerted just before 1 p.m. Aug. 19 to reports of shots fired in the 800 block of Prendergast Avenue. A male, who could be seen next to a white sedan and later identified as the 35-year-old Batista Perez, was pronounced dead. Another male not yet identified was transported by ambulance to UPMC Chautauqua for treatment of gunshot wounds and then airlifted to another hospital.
An update on the man’s condition has not been released.
In speaking to reporters hours after the shooting, Jamestown Police Chief Timothy Jackson called the shooting a targeted attack and made a plea to the public for information. The department later released images of a black vehicle it sought in the homicide investigation; that vehicle was eventually located, JPD said Monday in announcing the arrests of Fontanez Walker and Roldan-Pantojas.
Police had described the shooting as a drive-by incident.
