CELORON — A discarded cigarette may have caused Wednesday’s fire in the village of Celoron that damaged a second-story bedroom of a duplex.
Crews were alerted around 9:25 a.m. to a report of a possible electrical fire at a 19 Maple St. duplex. Celoron Fire Chief Jordan Bailey said he arrived to find “heavy smoke” inside the property and immediately called for assistance from the city of Jamestown, Lakewood and later Busti. Ellicott police, Chautauqua County EMS, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, the county FAST team and county fire coordinators also responded.
Significant smoke and water could be seen streaming from a second-story window after it had been knocked out for ventilation. “Crews did a great job of keeping it contained,” he said.
According to Capt. Rich Telford of the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team a “cigarette and/or ash was carelessly discarded and smoldered before fully igniting.” He added that the resident of the apartment was downstairs at the time and managed to get out safely.
