Pa. Man Facing Assault Charges In Warren County

WARREN, Pa. — An Erie man is in Warren County after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, strangling her, and threatening to burn her and cut off one of her fingers or toes.

Sean P. Canfield, 41, of Erie, is charged with aggravated indecent assault — forcible compulsion; terroristic threats; strangulation; simple assault; recklessly endangering another person; and indecent assault — forcible compulsion.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the woman, who had an “on and off again relationship” with Canfield, picked him up in Erie and drove him to a family camp in Pittsfield Township on Saturday, July 24.

She told police Canfield had told her he was planning to leave the area in violation of his state parole, according to the affidavit.

She told police Canfield accused her of infidelity and that they argued.

According to the affidavit, Canfield became enraged and threatened to beat her with a stick that he had picked up, then smash her with a case of pop that he was holding.

“The defendant then pinned the victim down on a love seat and was choking her with both of his hands around her neck,” according to the affidavit.

She told police Canfield apologized and that she put a mattress on the floor to go to sleep, according to police.

“The victim stated the defendant wanted to have sex with her though she did not want to,” according to the affidavit.

She told police she did not resist when he began having sexual contact with her. “I was afraid if I didn’t comply, he would hurt me,” she said in the affidavit. “He would beat and choke me again. He did it earlier and I knew he would do it again.”

She said Canfield stopped the sexual contact.

Later, Canfield “was holding a machete over his head” and telling the victim to pick whether he would cut off one of her fingers or one of her toes, according to the affidavit.

“Things again calmed a bit,” according to the affidavit. Then, “anger became violent as the defendant was holding a lit kerosene fuel lantern and telling her, ‘I’ll light you on fire.'”

Again accusing her of infidelity, Canfield “kicked her in the face, hitting her right eye,” police said in the affidavit.

She told police she did not sleep and agreed to take Canfield back to Erie in the morning, according to the affidavit.

When they stopped at a convenience store, Canfield took the keys, she told police. She used a second set of keys to leave him there and drove to an Erie hospital where she reported the alleged incident.

According to police, the victim had “visible, large, black and blue swelling around both her eyes, to include a cut under her right eye, a cut and swelling on the inside of her lower lip several small cuts on the right side of her neck. The victim also reported bruising to her chest area.”

Canfield was arraigned Friday before District Judge Todd Woodin and taken to Warren County Jail after failing to post $50,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3.
