JPS Mourning Loss Of Fifth Grader

Jamestown Public Schools on Friday said the district was mourning the loss of a fifth grade student who attended Jefferson Middle School. The student died unexpectedly Thursday night, the district said in a message to parents.

“When we received this terrible news, my thoughts immediately went out to family and friends,” said Superintendent Kevin Whitaker. “The impact of the passing of a young person has a lasting impact on those close to them, and the school district stands ready to offer support however needed.”

The district noted in its message that the student, who was not identified, touched many lives and will be missed.

“Our Jefferson Family is deeply saddened after receiving this terrible news,” said Jefferson Middle School Principal Leslie Melquist. “The student was such a kind, warm-hearted individual and will be missed tremendously.”

The district said school Crisis Intervention Teams would be available to assist students and staff in the buildings with any grief support they may need.
