Police ID Man Killed In Thursday Wrong-Way Car Crash
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said its investigation into Thursday morning’s wrong-way crash on Interstate 86 that killed a man and seriously injured a woman remains ongoing.
The crash occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the westbound lane of the interstate in the town of North Harmony.
In a news release Friday, the Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed as Bradley S. Wakefield, 51, of Cattaraugus. Wakefield was traveling west when he was struck by a vehicle reportedly going in the wrong direction.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle was identified as Heather R. Capell, 32, of Brunswick, Georgia. Capell suffered serious injuries and, as of Friday, was still being treated at an Erie, Pa., hospital.
Firefighters from Ashville and Bemus Point, along with Chautauqua County EMS and a county coroner, responded to the interstate, a portion of which was closed to traffic for several hours.
