County Surpasses 3,700 Cases To Begin New Year

According to New York state, Chautauqua County has surpassed 3,700 positive COVID-19 cases.

Through Saturday, New York Forward, the state’s online hub for coronavirus-related data, reported 3,785 total cases, up from 3,681 — the last reported number by the county on Thursday. New York state also reported two county deaths. Chautauqua County does not update numbers on weekends or holidays.

Hospitalizations across Western New York, which had been increasing, were down for the second straight day on Saturday to 504 after a spike of 544 on Thursday.

According to a release from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office, the eight-county region has a .04 hospitalization rate as compared to the total population and reported that 31% of hospital beds are available in the region.

In that release, the governor stressed equity in the vaccine distribution process, saying that he will refuse “to let race or income determine who lives and who dies in New York,” and vowing that he will not take the vaccine until it is available for his age group in “Black, Hispanic and poor communities across the state.”

“As we move into this New Year, one of our most pressing challenges, along with maintaining our diligence in stopping the spread of the virus, will be to ensure that the vaccine is made available fairly,” Governor Cuomo said. “COVID has exposed many of the existing injustices in our society, most notably that racism is, without a doubt, a public health crisis.”

He added, “Case and point – data has continued to show that despite higher infection and death rates in the Black and Latino communities, testing has remained more widely available in white communities.”
