Record temperatures sent a heatwave throughout Western New York on Tuesday, with temperatures in Jamestown reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperatures at Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, meanwhile, reached 88 degrees by 12:25 p.m., tying the record high for May 26 set in 1944, according to Dan Kelly, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

By mid-afternoon, it had surpassed the record, reaching 92 degrees — the hottest temperature in the Buffalo area since the Fourth of July in 2018.

Rochester and Watertown also reached record highs on Tuesday of 91 and 87, respectively, breaking records from 1944 and 2010.

“This heat is coming from a broad upper-level ridge of a high-pressure system that is bringing that warm air in from the south,” Kelly said. “We’re expecting that to break down over the course of the week and then cool down over the weekend.”

The heat comes three weeks after experiencing record low-temperatures of 29 degrees on May 9 that tied a daily record from 1947.
