2nd County Resident Recovers, No New Cases

MAYVILLE — A second county resident who previously tested positive for the coronavirus has fully recovered, and no new cases were announced Wednesday by the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services.

In all, 10 county residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak reached the U.S. Since then, two individuals have “recovered completely” and are no longer under quarantine.

The county is not releasing specific information regarding those who test positive. The virus has claimed the life of a county man, described as a gentleman in his 80s who had been tested and was receiving treatment at an Erie, Pa., hospital.

Christine Schuyler, county public health director, said as of Wednesday, 25 people were in mandatory quarantine (those who have tested positive or had household contact with a confirmed case); 30 people were in precautionary quarantine (those with recent travel history to a CDC level 3 country or have had proximal contact with a confirmed case); and 40 people were in mandatory isolation (those who have symptoms and are awaiting test results).

To date, 101 tests for COVID-19 have come back negative.

County officials also unveiled its online map of confirmed cases, broken down by sections along the fire battalion map used by fire officials. The map shows four confirmed COVID-19 cases in the south county region, five cases in the north county region and one in the eastern portion. There are no cases in the western part.

In Cattaraugus County, seven cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed. A woman who lives in the southeast part of the county, with no significant travel history, was tested for COVID-19 on Monday after being in close contact with an individual confirmed to have the virus; the positive test was reported on Tuesday, the county Department of Health announced.

The woman is reportedly resting at home under quarantine with her family. “She will be assessed for any medical support that we can provide, and we will monitor her symptoms closely,” the county Health Department said.

As of Wednesday, 107 Cattaraugus County residents were in mandatory quarantine and 10 residents were in precautionary quarantine. In all, 192 tests have been administered, with 163 coming back negative.

NUMBERS UP, NO RESPITE

New York state’s COVID-19 death count more than doubled in 72 hours to 1,941.

One month after New York discovered its first infection — a health care worker returning from Iran — the state tallied more than 83,000 positive cases. The 1,941 deaths were up from 965 Sunday morning. New York logged its first virus-related death March 13, an 82-year-old woman with emphysema.

With more than 12,000 people hospitalized, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the latest outbreak projections show no respite this month.

“What we’re looking at now is the apex — the top of the curve — roughly at the end of April, which means another month of this,” Cuomo told a state Capitol news briefing.

One model cited by Cuomo projected 16,000 deaths in New York once the outbreak runs its course in the coming months. Though the governor stressed it’s unclear how the pandemic will end.

“Nobody knows what’s going to happen. And I understand the need for closure, the need for control,” he said. “We’re at a place we’ve never been before.”
