There are no plans to close the Lakewood Family YMCA location.

Mark Eckendorf, Jamestown Area YMCA CEO, told The Post-Journal Monday that the Lakewood Family YMCA location will stay open for the foreseeable future.

Last week, Eckendorf said Jamestown Area YMCA officials will be making an announcement within the month about the organization’s future location. However, he wanted it to be additionally known to the public that the announcement will not be to consolidate the Jamestown and Lakewood YMCA locations, with the Lakewood location closing.

“We’re exploring some options. We’re involved in some discussions that are favorable to continue current operations in Lakewood for the next three years,” Eckendorf said. “If anyone thought the Lakewood Y is closing, that is not the plan.”

Eckendorf reiterated that YMCA officials hope to hold a press conference during the next month to publicly announce its plans to the public.

“We are working on an announcement soon, but things haven’t gone before the board,” he said.

The Post-Journal had contacted Eckendorf last week for an update of the Jamestown Area YMCA’s search for a possible new location.

Last April, he said that YMCA officials had been looking at properties along the Foote Avenue medical corridor as a possible new location, but nothing had been finalized.
