Crews were called to 614 Spring St. around 6:40 a.m. and arrived to find heavy fire and smoke on the first and second floors. Flames began shooting from the rear of the property and attic about a half hour after firefighters first arrived.

One person reportedly lived in the residence and managed to get out safely. No injuries were reported by city fire officials.

Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist toured the scene Monday morning and noted that an emergency demolition was likely needed due to the amount of damage the property sustained in the blaze.

By 1 p.m., much of the property had been razed.

Off-shift firefighters were called in to help douse the blaze. Crews remained on scene for much of the morning and early afternoon.

Officers with the Jamestown Police Department also responded. A portion of Spring Street, between East Sixth and East Eighth streets, was closed to traffic to allow room for emergency vehicles.

City fire investigators were looking into the cause of the balze. None was announced by press time.

The fire was next door to the Blackwell Chapel AME Zion Church, and did not appear to be damaged in the blaze. The Spring Street church celebrated its 130th anniversary in August 2018.
