Community Gathers To Pay Its Respects

WARREN, Pa. — Dozens of first responders and hundreds of civilians gathered Thursday morning at the Warren County Courthouse to honor fallen Conewango Township Police K9 officer Choper.

Choper, a five-year-old German shepherd who had been on the force for three years, died early Wednesday as a result of injuries sustained in a training incident Tuesday night.

At the request of Warren County commissioners, Gov. Tom Wolf called for flags in the county to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Thursday.

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin and State Rep. Kathy Rapp spoke at the event attended by more than 40 police officers including the entire Conewango police department, and contingents from all other municipal law enforcement agencies.

Choper’s partner and handler, Officer Scott Neiswonger, received hugs of condolence from at least 100 people at the end of the ceremony.

A funeral service will be held for Choper at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Warren Area High School.
