Gerry Man Surrenders To Police After Holding Woman At Gunpoint

Richard Sendall

GERRY — A Gerry man who allegedly held a woman at gunpoint Saturday and remained barricaded inside his home with two young children is facing multiple felony charges, New York State Police said.

Richard Sendall, 33, is scheduled to be arraigned in court after reportedly restraining the 31-year-old woman inside the pair’s Wilson Street residence around 9:30 a.m.

The woman was able to get out and went to police barracks on Route 60 for help. Troopers quickly set up a perimeter around the property, at which time hostage negotiators were summoned.

Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police said communicating with Sendall proved difficult as weather prohibited a robot used by police from safely delivering a cellphone. A trooper was able to make contact with the man while on a patrol around the property.

Sendall eventually exited the home around noon and surrendered to police.

The children, ages 2 and 7, were found in “good health” afterward and later returned to their mother, Balon said.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have a good way of communicating with him inside the house,” Balon told The Post-Journal. “Because of the weather, resources were delayed. One of our patrols on the perimeter ended up talking with him through a door. He came out and surrendered without incident.”

Balon said extra precaution was taken because children and weapons were involved. “In these kinds of cases we will call for the negotiators and set up the perimeter,” he said.

Sendall was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Gerry man was taken to police barracks for processing, but claimed he was having a medical emergency. He was transported to UPMC Chautauqua WCA hospital in Jamestown after initially receiving aid at the barracks.

The nature of his medical problem wasn’t known Saturday.

During an investigation, troopers seized loaded firearms from the residence.

Troopers were assisted Saturday by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the Special Operations Response Team and hostage negotiators.
