Fredonia backs shared highway services effort

In a 4-0 vote, Fredonia village trustees approved taking a look at a future partnership with the towns of Dunkirk and Pomfret regarding local highway services.

During its meeting Wednesday, the village said the effort will include “a cost-benefit and fiscal impact analysis to identify potential efficiencies, cost savings, avoided capital expenditures and long-term impacts associated with shared highway services.” In addition, the initiative will evaluate the governance and labor considerations of such a partnership.

Trustees Jon Espersen, Ben Brauchler, LeeAnn Lazarony and Paul Wandel were in favor. Christine Cruz Keefe was excused from the meeting that was rescheduled from Tuesday evening due to the weather.

As part of the approval, the town of Pomfret will act as the lead applicant in an application to seek $100,000 for the study with $50,000 coming from the Local Government Efficiency grant and another $50,000 from the town of Pomfret in required matching funding.

“Trustees of the village of Fredonia hereby formally supports the application for … the proposed shared highway department among the town of Pomfret, the town of Dunkirk and the village,” the resolution said.

Additionally, the village also announced it was exploring opportunities of local dog control services through inter-municipal cooperation that would include the towns of Pomfret and Dunkirk as well as the city of Dunkirk. That resolution also was approved.

Starting at $3.50/week.
