Southwestern High School has made history. For the first time ever, SWCS earned an invitation to the Shea’s Performing Arts Wonder Awards.

Southwestern’s production of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda: The Musical” was named one of Western New York’s Top 20 semifinalist productions. The production took home three major accolades during the May 17 awards ceremony in Buffalo.

Here are the honors:

– Outstanding Scenic Design & Execution Award, accepted by senior Alana Weaver

– All-Star Cast Award, presented to senior Adriana Bango

– Michael Shea Theater Educator of the Year, awarded to director Christine Beichner-Miller

After 15 years of dedication, mentorship, and creative vision, Beichner-Miller’s recognition is a testament to her extraordinary impact on students and the stage alike.

Beichner-Miller called the scenic design award “truly a collaborative effort,” crediting the seamless teamwork of Technical Director Sue Huther, Art Director Jenny Brown, and Prop Mistress Dana Lovecchio alongside a dedicated crew of students and community volunteers.

“I dream it and give us the vision,” Beichner-Miller said. “Sue builds it, Jenny paints it, and Dana dresses it. We bring out the best in each other.”

Southwestern shared the spotlight with fellow districts Jamestown Public Schools, Randolph Central School District, and Westfield Academy & Central School, for an evening of student performances on Shea’s stage.

Representing SWCS in the combined finale were Cameron Case, Gracie Watkins, Sydney Dawson, Bella Sirianni, Mikaela Luce, Bree Horton, Eden Heintzman, Josie Buttafarro, Claire Salisbury, Gelia Saullo, Payton Swartz, Adriana Bango, Macie Bruce, and Hannah Powell.

Retiring Superintendent Maureen Donahue applauded the entire musical team, including pit and band director Jamie Sigler and pit conductor and orchestra teacher Cody Hiller for their outstanding achievement.

“A school musical is a joyful celebration of talent and tenacity,” said Donahue. “It is very satisfying to see their many long months of hard work and creativity be so deservedly acknowledged.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
