This past weekend the Jamestown A Capella Vespers Choir celebrated its 100th anniversary, something that has been recognized by the city council and is set to be recognized by the mayor this Friday.

During Monday’s work session Council President Tony Dolce said he was able to participate in the 100th anniversary service last weekend along with over 400 alumni of the choir.

“It was fun to see the different decades and age groups,” Dolce said. “Something that came up in our discussion was that people from all over the country have asked about this thing that still goes on in our community, which is amazing.”

Dolce said people from the West Coast were commenting that nothing out there has reached 100 years yet, and that others were expressing that they could not believe choirs and other similar things went for multiple generations like this.

“We really do have a gem that is one of the great things that singles out Jamestown,” Dolce said.

Dolce acknowledged that while he will not be around for the 200th anniversary, he hoped the choir would continue going for a long time, adding that this Friday the anniversary is scheduled to be recognized by the mayor. Dolce said they asked and she agreed to issue a proclamation at the Jamestown High School Christmas concert before winter break.

“So she’ll be issuing a proclamation recognizing the choir’s 100th anniversary and that will be this Friday morning,” Dolce said. “I’ll be there … I’ll be helping a little bit.”

Dolce thanked the mayor for being willing to do that and wished the council a Merry Christmas.
