The Allen Park Women’s Club recently hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the commemorative boulder located at the park entrance.
Club President Jackie Benson led the service, during which members placed small flags and a new wreath at the monument to honor fallen service members. Sandy Stewart shared a solemn remembrance of those who served to protect the nation’s safety and freedom. Representatives from the Blue Star Mothers also attended the event. Guest speaker Sue Rowley explained the differences between Blue Star and Gold Star family designations and provided a refresher on military holiday etiquette. She noted that Armed Forces Day honors current service members, Memorial Day remembers the fallen, and Veterans Day celebrates all who have served. Rowley concluded by thanking the club for its ongoing support. The Allen Park Women’s Club has made financial contributions and care package items, which the Blue Star Mothers ship to deployed troops each Christmas season.
The formal ceremony concluded with the playing of “Taps” by Scott Graham.
Following the service, the group gathered at the Allen Park Pavilion for refreshments and a brief business meeting. During the meeting, the club finalized details for its major seasonal fundraiser, the annual drive-through chicken barbecue that will take place Aug. 13 at the Allen Park Ice Arena. Tickets are available through club members for $18.
The club also approved plans for the upcoming summer concert series at the Allen Park Bandshell. The season kicks off at 7 p.m. June 10 with a performance by the Jamestown High School Band. The series will continue weekly for seven weeks starting June 24, featuring the Jamestown Municipal Band. The Allen Park Women’s Club will operate the concession stand throughout the concert season, serving hot dogs, candy, fresh popcorn and its homemade fudge.

Thanks to a donor, the club will debut a brand-new popcorn machine at the stand this summer.
