A Second Street home was damaged when fire broke out just before midnight on Wednesday.

Jamestown firefighters responded to 901 E. Second St. for a reported structure fire at 11:55 p.m. and found heavy fire in the corner of the home with possible extension into a home next door at 903 E. Second St.

First responders helped those living at 903 E. Second St. evacuate the home with their pets. Firefighters also had reports that people may have been in 901 E. Second St., but a thorough search of the building revealed no one in the home, the department said in a news release.

The crew from Engine 4 set up operations behind the house on Austin Place. Crews pulled two 1.75-inch hand lines to knock down the bulk of the fire on the home’s exterior before entering and fighting the fire from inside the home. Crews from Engine 3 made the hydrant for Engine 4 before joining in with the rest of the interior crews, the department said.

After helping evacuate 903 E. Second St., crews from Ladder 1 set the truck up on Second Street and pulled a hand line to help protect the 903 E. Second St. before going into the front of 901 E. Second St. to make sure there was no one inside. An off-shift callback of 10 firefighters was made to help with other rescue calls and to search for people inside the home.

The 901 E. Second St. property was posted not to be occupied by the city Development Department. Fire crews left the scene by 4:30 a.m.
