MAYVILLE — A Pennsylvania man who was the subject of a large search in the fall of 2021 will serve time in New York state prison.

Chautauqua County Court Judge David Foley sentenced 40-year-old James Gnacinski on Wednesday to six years, plus five years of post-release supervision.

According to the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, the Erie, Pa., man pleaded guilty in February of this year to a second-degree burglary charge. His arrest in October 2021 capped a multi-agency search that began after sheriff’s deputies were alerted to a possible burglary incident at a hunting cabin on Route 394 in Westfield. A man fled from the cabin as deputies approached.

Sheriff James Quattrone told The Post-Journal at the time that the suspect had a shotgun with him but dropped it when entering a wooded area. During a subsequent search, a man’s coat was found that contained a Pennsylvania driver’s license. A short time later, a vehicle with a registration matching the man’s name was found stuck on a well road near the Route 394 cabin.

The suspect, later identified as Gnacinski, was located the following day in the town of Chautauqua.

At the time he was apprehended, Gnacinski was wanted on attempted homicide and a bevy of other charges in Pennsylvania stemming from a domestic incident.

Gnacinski had been represented locally by the county Public Defender’s Office. He previously had been indicted on charges of first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree burglary and burglary before entering the guilty plea earlier this year.

“The DA would like to thank the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Divisions of Investigation unit for their hard work on this case,” Jason Schmidt, district attorney, said in a statement Wednesday.

Also sentenced this week was 28-year-old Michael Bland to five years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision. In April, Bland pleaded guilty to a second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon charge.

Bland, who was taken into custody in March, was sentenced by Foley on his second violent felony conviction within 10 years, “requiring the Judge to sentence him as a second violent felony offender,” the DA’s office said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
