JCC Trustees Approve AI Policy

Jamestown Community College Board of Trustees Tuesday approved a new Artificial Intelligence policy.

According to JCC officials, in a written statement, the policy establishes the principles and responsibilities for the use of AI across all operations of Jamestown Community College, ensuring alignment with the institution’s mission, commitment to student success, ethical standards, and accreditation requirements defined by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

JCC continues to advance its vision “to support our students’ journey to

success in the local and global workplace with quality, in-demand learning experiences” by embracing the use of technology, including AI, to best prepare our students for career success. In addition, JCC recognizes the importance of AI in streamlining administrative processes and improving efficiency, the policy noted.

JCC President Dr. Daniel DeMarte said the policy continues JCC’s momentum with AI. He said the policy does two things: It satisfies the MSCHE requirement, and a policy to protect JCC in the use of AI. DeMarte added that the policy will continue to change and evolve as AI does.

The president added the guidelines “will aid faculty and others in the implementation interpretation of exactly how we’re going to use and apply AI. This sort of sets the stage and makes it safe for us to carry out our work. It is one that we’ll need to probably revisit with frequency going forward.”

DeMarte noted that AI is part of JCC’s new five-year plan entitled Elevate 2030. He said that JCC wants to harness the power of AI to enhance teaching and learning and operational performance.

Included in JCC’s five-year plan is Strategic Direction No. 2, in which one of the goals, envisions complete comprehensive AI training and documentation to promote operational efficiency, change readiness, instructional innovation, and success planning, with a focus on integrating AI tools into teaching practices to improve student engagement and learning outcomes, while upholding ethical standards and responsible AI use.

Another goal is to leverage AI technologies to review, update, and streamline workflows, policies and procedures; provide AI training to faculty and staff in order to establish a secure a scalable AI infrastructure; and incorporate AI-driven tools into curricular, and co-curricular activities to support personalized learning, career exploration, and ethical considerations in AI applications.
