CASSADAGA — For only the second time in more than a half-century, the role of clerk and treasurer will be changing hands in the village.
Roxanne Astry submitted her letter of resignation after 33 years of service to the Village of Cassadaga at a recent meeting of the Village Board of Trustees. Her final day in the role of Clerk, Treasurer, and Registrar of Vital Statistics for the Village of Cassadaga will be May 31.
“I have loved serving the residents of the village and getting to know so many wonderful people over the past 33 years,” Astry said. “I have learned and grown so much as a person over the years. I’ve always taken my responsibility seriously, but I feel it is time to pass on the torch.”
Astry was appointed as Deputy Clerk and Treasurer on April 4, 1990. Less than two months later on June 1, she took over for Louise Page as Clerk/Treasurer. Between Astry and Page, the Village of Cassadaga has only had two Clerk/Treasurers spanning more than 55 years.
Over her time working for the village, Astry served with eight mayors – including her husband, Bill Astry. She also served with 34 Village Trustees, 15 Zoning Board of Appeals members, 10 Planning Board members, 13 Deputy Clerks, 11 Utility Workers, three Superintendents of Public Works, five Zoning/Code Enforcement Officers, and six Village Attorneys.
Astry’s official letter of resignation was accepted by the board, on a motion by her husband Bill Astry, the current Deputy Mayor. Bill Astry abstained from the vote. Roxanne Astry was later appointed as Deputy Clerk and Consultant, with all in favor except for Bill Astry, who abstained.
Deputy Clerk Annette McChesney will soon fill the role of Clerk/Treasurer as of June 1. Astry will be staying on as Deputy Clerk and Consultant at that time.
McChesney was appointed as Village Clerk immediately after Astry’s resignation was accepted, on a motion by Village Trustee Cathy Cruver. The motion passed unanimously, with no abstentions. She was also appointed as Registrar of Vital Statistics.
“I have full confidence in her abilities to carry on,” Astry said.
