A SUNY Fredonia student is facing charges following an alleged threat made on social media regarding a campus building.
On Wednesday, SUNY Fredonia sent out a notice on behalf of University Police to the student body. The notice stated that officers “were aware of a social media post related to Thompson Hall that was posted this afternoon. UPD and Fredonia Police are at Thompson Hall out of an abundance of caution but at this time, there is no credible threat. Classes are continuing as normal while police investigate. UPD is working with the social media company to identify the author of the post.”
The notice did not say what social media was used or what the post had specifically stated.
The next day SUNY Fredonia sent an update on behalf of University Police Chief Brent Isaacson, regarding the investigation. “As a result of that investigative work, we have arrested a student and charged that student with Making a Terroristic Threat, a Class D felony. UPD’s investigation confirmed the initial assessment that there was never a risk of physical violence during this incident. The student was booked by University Police and per New York State’s bail reform law, was released with an appearance ticket which commands him to report to court at a later date. The student has been removed from campus and declared persona non grata, which subjects the student to arrest if they appear on campus,” he stated.
The name of the student was not released in the statement.
According to Isaacson, University Police and the Fredonia Police Department were assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
