YWCA Investigating Use Of Spray On Cots
The Jamestown YWCA said it was aware of allegations that an employee used Melatonin spray on children cots “prior to nap time.”
An investigation is being undertaken by the facility, located at 401 N. Main St.
Locally, the YWCA offers several classrooms for children as young as 6 weeks and up to 5 years old.
Lindsay Nobbs, YWCA early care and education director, outlined the allegations involving the use of Melatonin in a letter dated July 15 that was sent to parents.
“The use of chemicals or essential oils in any classroom in the presence of children is directly prohibited,” Nobbs said. “Additionally, our staff are to only use sprays that are (Office of Children and Family Services) approved and purchased by the organization. This Melatonin spray has not been purchased by or approved by the YWCA Jamestown.”
Melatonin supplements are commonly used as a sleep aid.
It was not specified when the spray was allegedly used, how often or on how many cots where children slept.
“We want you as a family member to know we are taking this matter seriously and have addressed the issue with staff taking any necessary disciplinary and educational actions needed to ensure this will not happen,” Nobbs said. “We want to assure you that we take your child’s health and safety very seriously and aim to provide a child care environment that is safe, loving and high quality.”
When contacted Friday, the YWCA further said it was aware of the allegations, which reportedly involve a single employee.
The organization released the following statement: “Rest assured, the YWCA of Jamestown takes all such allegations seriously. The YWCA is conducting its own investigation into the allegation, Furthermore, the YWCA is committed to working with any other office or agency who may be conducting their own investigation. Out of respect for any investigation, the YWCA will make no further comment at this time.”
