Early voting begins Saturday for primary election

Registered Democrats in Chautauqua County are eligible to participate in an upcoming primary for both a state and federal office, while registered Republicans have a single local primary and that is in Kiantone.

June 23 is Primary Day in New York state.

For registered Democrats, they will be asked to select candidates for the office of State Comptroller and Representative in Congress for the 23rd District.

For registered Republicans, those who live in the town of Kiantone are asked to select the candidate for town clerk.

The deadline for anyone not registered to vote in the primary is Saturday. According to the Chautauqua County Board of Elections, per state election law, voters who are already registered would have needed to change their political party affiliation back in February to be eligible to vote in this Primary Election.

STATE COMPTROLLER

There are three candidates seeking the Democratic line for State Comptroller.

Incumbent Thomas B. DiNapoli is seeking re-election. He was first appointed State Comptroller in February, 2007, and later elected to his first full term in the 2010 general election, and subsequently re-elected in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

DiNapoli is being challenged by Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle.

Warshaw has never served in an elected office. He served as the Chief of Staff for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and later worked as an assistant secretary to former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Most recently, he was the chief operating officer for Enterprise Community Partners.

Goyle grew up in Kansas and served two terms on the Kansas State Legislature before moving to New York City in 2010 working in various philanthropy.

The winner will face Republican Joseph Hernandez in November.

CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 23

Aaron Gies and Kevin Stocker are both seeking the Democratic line to run for the 23rd Congressional District. Neither has held political office before. The winner will square off against incumbent Nick Langworthy, a Republican, who has held the seat since 2023.

Gies is currently an Assistant Professor of Theology and Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure University, while Stocker is a long-time attorney from the Buffalo area.

KIANTONE TOWN CLERK

Sandy Volpe Jr. and Jennifer Schmitt are the two candidates seeking the Republican line for town clerk.

Currently Gail Davis is the town clerk.

EARLY VOTING

There will not be early voting in Mayville for the primary.

“The yellow card that voters received in the middle of May listed our poll sites for all of 2026, but not the specific elections which these sites were being utilized for,” Democratic Election Commissioner Luiz Torres explained.

Republican Election Commissioner Nacole Ellis added, “”We understand that voters in the Mayville area may have read their Annual Yellow Card and thought it meant that the Board of Elections would be open as an Early Voting poll site, but the Mayville site was never designated as an Early Voting site for the Primary Election.”

Voters who cast their ballot early will not be able to cast a ballot during subsequent early voting days or on primary Election Day. Those who request an early mail or absentee ballot will only be able to vote using a provisional affidavit ballot, which can be counted if voters have not already returned a Ballot.
