Longtime Fredonia Police Officer, Chief Offers Thanks

Philip Maslak

FREDONIA — Retiring Fredonia Police Chief Philip Maslak came to say goodbye this week as the village Board of Trustees accepted his resignation letter.

After Mayor Douglas Essek thanked Maslak for his service on behalf of the village, he invited the 29-year member of the Fredonia Police Department to speak.

“I felt it important that I be here tonight in person to share my sentiment to the village of Fredonia in regards to the last 29 years,” Maslak began.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to wear the badge and I know I’ve done it the right way,” he continued. “I just wanted the public to know that it really meant a lot to me to serve and protect and be there for each and every one of the village residents in their time of need.

“Retirement’s never easy, but it’s time for change, and I’m looking forward to it. I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ and if there’s anything I can ever do for you, please let me know.”

Village officials gave Maslak a standing ovation as he left the podium.

His retirement takes effect today. Maslak officially handed over the reins to Joe Gerace on Dec. 13, but he stayed on the job a couple of weeks to assist the new chief.

Starting at $3.50/week.
