Library Ambassador Program A Success

LAKEWOOD — There was a reason for smiles by the board of directors and library staff at the Lakewood Memorial Library.

An exit interview of the outgoing Southwestern seniors who participated in the Youth Ambassador Program confirmed the program provided them with leadership experiences they would not have had otherwise; each met eligibility requirements for National Honor Society with their accumulated volunteer hours, and each received scholarships.

The ambassador program is led by adult volunteers who guide high school students in leadership projects while fostering community connectedness.

Sydney Segrue, one of the founding members of the ambassador program, said she learned the value of “purposeful talking” and gained confidence in expressing her ideas to adults during numerous opportunities to present at board meetings.

“The willingness of the library staff and board members to hear my ideas, allow me to act on them, and support me during projects was really life changing to my mindset,” she said. “I learned what it means to create something in a community and how to be solution focused. I felt valued as an individual and community member.”

Graham Rusco, one of four senior ambassadors, enjoyed the “excuse to expand his understanding of the community.”

The small group organized a 5K run/walk as a project to raise money for the library. Graham said the goal of putting on a race gave him an excuse to enter businesses that he would normally not have thought to go into. His experience with talking to business owners and seeking their support helped forge relationships and expand his understanding of the greater community.

“I went from being a member of the community to becoming part of the community,” Rusco said.

The Ralph and Frances P. Marra Scholarship is awarded to a student who shows “willingness to become involved in a variety of activities for the betterment of self and fellow student.” The state Comptroller’s Office provides a scholarship for academic excellence and the potential for leadership. Sydney Segrue, the recipient of both, hopes that other students will see the value in participating in the Ambassador Program.

In addition to organizing a running a 5K race, the group of students learned about social media and marketing, interfaced directly with area business owners, and learned how to pitch ideas.

Nancy Padak, the president of the library trustees, said she looks forward to the next influx of Youth Ambassadors at the Lakewood Library. For more information about the program contact Shannon Taylor at director@lakewoodlibrary.org.
