COVID-19 positivity rate on rise in region

Rising positivity rates facing Western New York also are being seen in Chautauqua County.

According to the Health Department, 86 new COVID-19 cases were reported from Friday to Sunday bringing the total number since the pandemic to 8,520. There are 159 active and seven hospitalizations while 8,219 have recovered. Seven are reported hospitalized.

On Monday, New York state noted that positivity rates in Western New York were the highest. According to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office, in Western New York the positivity rate is 4.8% — that’s above the Empire State average of 3.2%. In Chautauqua County, the positivity rate was 2.6%.

“While we have made incredible progress, COVID is not over and we must all continue to practice the guidelines we know stop this virus in its tracks,” Cuomo said. “The ability to win the foot race between the infection rates and the vaccine rates is dependent on the behavior of New Yorkers. We have shown ourselves and the nation once before just how New York Tough we all can be when we work together. Until the day this war is won, I encourage everyone to continue to wash their hands, wear a mask and socially distance. We are closer than ever to the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Vaccinations also continue to increase — in the region and across the state. In Chautauqua County, 36.9% have received a first dose of the COVID-19 medication with 30,173 having both doses.

New York state numbers note 37.9% have had first shots and 25% have completed the series.
