Fair Point – the beginnings of Chautauqua Institution

Did you know that the beginnings of Chautauqua Institution started in 1874 as a Methodist Sunday School Assembly on 50 acres of existing campgrounds known as Fair Point which was leased from the Chautauqua Lake Camp Meeting Association.

This first Assembly was created by visionaries Lewis Miller and Rev. John Heyl Vincent on their the path of furthering religious and educational opportunities.

Although not originally intended to be a permanent home, the lakeside location was found over the years to be ideal and, in 1902, the Assembly became known as Chautauqua Institution.
