Pre-War-Era Train Sets Displayed At Library

Ninety-nine year old Merle McKimm looks over a pre-WW II Lionel train display at Farman Library in Ellington.

ELLINGTON — A display of Pre-World War II-era Lionel trains were on view at Ellington’s Farman Free Library for the month of June.

The Schrantz Family provided the six train sets, all in their original condition. The largest train, a standard gauge set, was manufactured in the late 1920s. The four streamliners were produced in the mid-1930s and are modeled after real trains of that time.

A late 1930s steam engine and passenger set makes up the sixth train in the group. A station, crossing gate and two houses from the same period are part of the display.

A recent admirer of the trains was 99-year-old Merle McKimm, a life-long train enthusiast.
