Organizers Call Beach Cleanup A Success

DUNKIRK — Dunkirk’s Great Beach Cleanup is already looking forward to next summer after a solid turnout and great accomplishments over the weekend.

Co-organizer Jodi Falkner, while thanking sponsors, noted Saturday was a perfect day to be at the beaches. “It was a great day with a lot of amazing volunteers,” she said.

More than 100 volunteers helped from Wright Park, to Main Street, Cedar Beach and Point Gratiot. Numerous bags of trash were collected and hundreds of pieces of driftwood were removed during the course of the morning.

“This event wouldn’t have happened without amazing volunteers and concerned citizens who care about their community,” Falkner said.

Those who came out were family members, individuals, Revitalize Dunkirk members, Boy Scout Troop 206 and a group from Cross-Fit Dunkirk.

Another co-organizer, Jeff Robinson of the city, noted he is not finished yet. He plans to rake portions of Point Gratiot beaches for the remainder of the week.

Sponsors for this year’s cleanup included: Home Depot, Andrew Chillemi Lawncare & Landscape, Jim and Dru Pasierb, Lake Erie Watershed Protection Alliance, The Catering Company, Frank Beach, Country Fair, Beach House Grill, city of Dunkirk, Sandy Sobczyk, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, RosaLee Owens and the OBSERVER.

“Next year, we will plan earlier, recruit more volunteers groups and have an even larger after party,” Falkner noted.
